About Body Horrors

Body Horrors is a blog started in February 2011 which aims to explore the intersection of infectious diseases, the human body, public health and anthropology/sociology. My goal is to look at the interactions of local geography and cultural and social behaviors upon communicable diseases. The focus is primarily on parasitic helminths, microbiological organisms and insect vectors.

The blog is written by Rebecca Kreston, a microbiologist and infectious disease scholar with a Masters of Tropical Medicine from Tulane University’s School of Public Health & Tropical Medicine, where I’m also currently studying Epidemiology. I’ve lived in tropical jungles, beaches and deserts around the world and have been exposed to quite a few diseases in my time. I now live in New Orleans and regularly battle insects of the Diptera, Siphonaptera and Hymenoptera orders. Lemme tell ya, I really dig infectious diseases, much to the dismay of those dining with me – I love reading about their history, their sociological implications, cultural-specific responses to infection, gross personal stories of infestation (go on!) and how modern humanity is managing their presence in society; this blog is an expression of that curiosity and my personal research.

If you have any questions about this blog or articles, any ideas about how it might be improved or even if you want to give me a virtual high-five and some encouragement, please post them in the Comments below or you can reach me at bodyhorrors at gmail dot com. Don’t worry, I’m not contagious! Truly, I love getting feedback and hearing from my readers so go on and say something!

As to (mis)adventures in social media – I’m @thebodyhorrors on Twitter and you can also check out the Body Horrors tumblr for shorter, more topical posts on infectious diseases and such.

Rock on — this is great. I know it’s hard to keep up a schedule of posting sometimes, but if you can keep the fire going, I’ll keep on reading. Best of luck!

Do you have an RSS feed? Or FB page?

Hi Grace! I don’t have a Facebook page but you can receive my latest articles by email subscription – scroll down the menu bar on the right of the page and plug in your email address. It’ll be the fifth option available.

I’m currently on my honeymoon right now and don’t have access to a computer to see where my RSS button is but it does exist somewhere on my website! When I get on a computer, I’ll point it out. Thanks so much for visiting and all the best in the New Year!
